Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa: Approx. 56 km | Drive time: Approx. 1 to 1.5 hours

Rise early for the first and perhaps most dramatic highlight of the entire tour. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been standing since the fifth century, rises nearly two hundred metres above the flat jungle plain in a sight that stops every visitor in their tracks. Built as a royal palace in the sky by King Kashyapa, the climb carries you past vivid frescoes of celestial maidens painted directly into rock faces, a polished mirror wall covered in centuries of inscribed poetry, and beautifully engineered water gardens at the base that were functional over fifteen hundred years ago. The panoramic views from the summit platform, stretching across the green forest canopy in every direction, are as breathtaking as the history beneath your feet.

In the afternoon, drive approximately one to one and a half hours east to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s magnificent medieval capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary scale and beauty. Explore the remains of royal palace complexes, intricately decorated shrines and ancient reservoirs before arriving at the Gal Vihara, where four colossal Buddha figures, a seated, a standing and a reclining form, have been carved directly into a wall of solid granite with a skill and serenity that is deeply moving to witness. After breakfast, begin the drive southward towards Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital and its most important cultural city. The journey takes approximately two and a half to three hours through changing landscapes of scrubland, green hills and the first glimpses of mountain country ahead. En route, stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is simply unlike anything else you will visit on this tour. Five ancient cave shrines carved into a granite outcrop house over one hundred and fifty Buddha statues of every size and posture, with ceilings and walls completely covered in Buddhist murals painted across more than two thousand years of devotion. The air inside is cool and fragrant with incense, and the silence is absolute.

Continue to a traditional Spice Garden in Matale, where knowledgeable guides lead you through groves of cinnamon trees, pepper vines, cardamom plants and a fascinating range of Ayurvedic medicinal herbs, explaining the cultivation and uses of the spices that made the island of Ceylon famous across centuries of world trade. Arriving in Kandy, spend the evening at the lovely Kandy Lake before attending a traditional Kandyan Cultural Dance Performance, a vivid and energetic showcase of Sri Lanka’s ancient performance traditions including mask dances, drumming and acrobatics performed by firelight.

After breakfast, visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist sites and a major pilgrimage destination. Following the visit, continue your journey into Sri Lanka’s picturesque hill country, passing through scenic mountain roads, lush tea plantations, waterfalls, and mist-covered valleys.

En route, stop at a Tea Factory and Plantation to learn about the production of world-famous Ceylon Tea, from cultivation and harvesting to processing and packaging. Enjoy a tea-tasting experience before continuing to Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England” for its colonial charm and cool climate.

Upon arrival, explore popular attractions such as Gregory Lake and admire the town’s colonial-era architecture. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes and refreshing mountain air, Nuwara Eliya offers a relaxing contrast to Sri Lanka’s cultural cities.

After breakfast, leave the cool highlands behind and begin the long, scenically spectacular drive southward towards the Sri Lankan coast. The first two hours carry you through some of the most beautiful landscapes on the island, descending from high tea country through forested mountain slopes and opening gradually into the dramatic Ella Gap. In the village of Ella, stop to admire the famous Nine Arches Bridge, a graceful colonial-era viaduct of stone arches framed by tea bushes and jungle, best seen in the moment a train passes silently overhead across the valley. A short distance away, Ravana Falls cascades in a broad, roaring curtain down red rock and lush greenery, a refreshing and photogenic pause before the southward push continues.

As the hills recede behind you and the landscape flattens toward the coast, the warm salt air of the southern shoreline begins to replace the highland chill. Arrive at your beach resort in Hambantota and spend the evening entirely at leisure by the ocean. After a full and varied day on the road, the sound of waves and the stretch of open sea is a deeply restorative welcome.

Hambantota to Yala National Park: Approx. 47 km | Drive time: Approx. 1.5 to 2 Hours

This day is given entirely to the wild, and it is one that most travellers carry with them long after the journey ends. Set out early for Yala National Park, approximately forty-seven kilometres from Hambantota, which is widely regarded as one of the finest wildlife reserves in Asia and consistently ranked among the most renowned places worldwide for spotting leopards in their native habitats. Aboard open jeeps guided by experienced naturalists, explore the park’s varied terrain of dry scrub forest, ancient lagoons, coastal dunes and open grassland, scanning the tree lines and waterhole edges for the animals that call this remarkable place home.

Yala is home to one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere on earth, as well as large herds of Asian elephants, sloth bears moving through the undergrowth, mugger crocodiles resting on mudflats, spotted deer, water buffalo, golden jackals and a staggering richness of birdlife that includes painted storks, sea eagles and the gloriously plumed peacock. Wildlife sightings in any national park depend on nature, but early morning departures significantly improve your chances of an encounter you will never forget.

After the safari, return to the resort and spend the remainder of the day entirely at your own pace, whether by the pool, on the beach or quietly resting after an exhilarating morning in the wild.

Overnight at Hambantota

After breakfast, begin the coastal drive westward along Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern shoreline towards Colombo, with the Indian Ocean visible on your left for much of the journey. The first major stop of the day is the Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest and best-preserved examples of European colonial fortification in all of Asia. Originally built by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and later expanded and reinforced by the Dutch, the fort is today a living neighbourhood of cobblestoned streets, whitewashed colonial churches, boutique guesthouses, a lighthouse, independent cafés, local art galleries and ocean-facing ramparts where the light at any hour of day is simply beautiful. Allow yourself generous time to wander without a plan, as the fort rewards the unhurried visitor.

Continue the coastal drive northward to Colombo, approximately one hundred and twenty-six kilometres from Galle, taking around two to two and a half hours. Check in at the hotel and spend the evening as you please, whether strolling along Galle Face Green, exploring the city’s restaurant scene or simply resting after a full week on the road.

After breakfast, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant commercial capital. Visit the renowned Gangaramaya Temple, one of the city’s most important Buddhist landmarks, known for its unique architecture and cultural significance. Continue to Galle Face Green, a popular oceanfront promenade offering beautiful coastal views and a glimpse into local life. Explore the lively Pettah Market, famous for its colourful streets, local products, and bustling atmosphere. You will also visit Independence Square, an important national monument surrounded by well-maintained gardens, before stopping at One Galle Face Mall for shopping, dining, or purchasing last-minute souvenirs.

Following the city tour, your chauffeur will transfer you to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward journey.
