Start early in the morning to visit the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most famous historical landmarks. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, this ancient royal citadel rises nearly 200 metres above the surrounding plains. The climb begins through beautifully landscaped water gardens and boulder gardens before reaching the famous Sigiriya frescoes, known for their remarkable ancient artwork and vibrant colours.

Continue past the historic Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect the king’s image and now covered with centuries-old inscriptions. At the summit, explore the ruins of the royal palace while enjoying panoramic views of forests, reservoirs, and distant mountains. The climb usually takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour and offers a rewarding experience throughout.

Later, proceed to Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore ancient palaces, audience halls, stupas, temples, and the massive Parakrama Samudra reservoir. After breakfast, set out for one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences available anywhere in Sri Lanka, a jeep safari through Minneriya National Park, a protected wilderness reserve centred on an ancient reservoir built by King Mahasena in the third century AD. Minneriya is most celebrated for the extraordinary phenomenon known as the Gathering, a seasonal congregation of wild Asian elephants, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, that converge on the reservoir’s grassy shoreline as the dry season draws water levels down and fresh grass appears along the margins. The sight of so many elephants moving, feeding, playing, and bathing together in a single landscape is one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in all of Asia.

Beyond elephants, Minneriya supports a rich ecosystem of leopards, sambar deer, painted storks, cormorants, and a remarkable diversity of waterbirds that make any safari here a genuinely rewarding wildlife encounter regardless of the season. From the temple, walk the shaded promenade along the shores of Kandy Lake, the man-made reservoir that sits at the centre of the city like a mirror reflecting the surrounding green hills and ancient rooftops. Continue to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, widely considered among the finest botanical gardens in all of Asia, where a magnificent avenue of Royal Palms, giant bamboo groves, orchid houses, and centuries-old specimen trees spread across a great meander of the Mahaweli River. After breakfast, proceed to Kandy Railway Station and board one of the world’s most scenic train journeys from Kandy to Nanu Oya. This scenic hill country train journey travels through mist-covered mountains, tunnels, cascading waterfalls, lush valleys, and sprawling tea plantations, offering spectacular views along the way. The route is especially beautiful in the morning when the hills are covered in soft mist and fresh mountain air.

The Galle Dutch Fort, built originally by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and extensively developed by the Dutch in the seventeenth, encloses an entire living town within its massive coral-and-granite walls. Inside, cobbled streets lined with Dutch colonial buildings now house boutique galleries, jewellery designers, spice traders, and cafes where you can sit with a cold drink and look out across the ramparts to the open sea beyond.
